40ft Pop Up Shop Commonwealth Games Container Case Study
Our client approached us with a brief to provide an open plan structure consisting of six 40ft new high cube containers and one 40ft used high cube container. All of the new containers were to be single storey whilst the used container was to be stacked on top of one unit to provide an advertise hoarding and storage unit. A staircase was required to access the storage unit and the client also required a terrace to be constructed on the top of the units for the presentation of awards. The structure was to be painted in the clients corporate colours and provide plenty of opportunity for branding and the display of stock and consumables. The structure was to be used as a temporary pop-up shop for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014.
Our client was an events agency who provided support to large multi-national companies during high profile events. The client had little brief to work from and no designs yet the lead time was extremely short. Lion Containers Fabrications quickly built the specification and ensured that the project came to fruition within a very short amount of time. The 7 x 40ft high cube containers were modified as follows:
Lion Containers Fabrications worked very closely with the client to achieve the project, full drawings were provided throughout as well as regular progress visits and work in progress photographs. The units were delivered, weather-proofed and commissioned by Lion Containers Fabrications and mechanically and electrically linked on site. The air conditioning was commissioned by Lion Containers Fabrications and the windows were installed on site as was the staircase with its landings and walkways. Significant project management was required for the works as the project had to be completed on time in order to allow the clients shop-fitters plenty of time to install their equipment into the containers prior to opening.

The client had little brief to work from and no designs yet the lead time was extremely short. Lion Containers Fabrications quickly built the specification and ensured that the project came to fruition within a very short amount of time. The 7 x 40ft high cube containers were modified as follows:
- 6 x 40ft new high cube containers to be stacked on site creating an open plan retail space, the seventh used high cube 40ft container was to be stacked to act as a storage area and advertising hoarding.
- Various sections of the containers were removed to create a modular structure and link the units together in order to maximise space. The apertures were surrounded with box section and were made suitable for later joining on the customers site.
- Custom built aluminium framed patio doors were fabricated and installed behind the cargo doors, these acted as main entry points to the public. By retaining the cargo doors the structure was easily locked at night with the cargo doors covering the aluminium doors.
- A custom built stair case was designed and fabricated in order to access the terrace and storage area. The staircase was built to Building Regulations and retro fitted to the containers on the customers site.
- The roof sections of two containers were covered with a 2mm steel durbar flooring and re-enforced to create a terrace area.
- Due to requirements for disabled access, custom built steel access ramps with fixing chains were fabricated - these were fabricated and delivered to site in two parts so that it was easy for the customer to manoeuvre the units around site.
- A fully certified electrical system was installed comprising of LED track lighting, external floodlights, double metal sockets, double floor sockets and external commando sockets. All electrics were protected by an MCB and, as the customer wanted to retain an industrial look to the containers, all electrical cabling was presented in a c-section metal cable tray suspended from the ceiling.
- Four 5KW air conditioning units were installed so that the clients customers had a comfortable experience whilst using the pop-up shop.
- Break glass fire alarms and smoke detectors were fitted throughout the installation.
- A custom made Z-shape floating shelf was installed for the installation of customer stock.
- Vinyl flooring was fitted to the internal floors of all containers, this overlaid the standard, original marine ply flooring.
- Security lockboxes and insurance rated padlocks were provided with all containers.
- 8ft x 4ft ply boards were installed at intervals throughout the containers in order for the customers professional shop-fitters to hang retail displays.
- All containers were re-sprayed, due to the marketing impact that this installation needed to make, we applied three coats of paint in the customers corporate colours, orange.
