40ft Boombox Container for Hereford Skatepark Case Study
Our client approached us with a brief to provide a two-tier structure made out of 2 x 40ft new shipping containers replicating a 1980’s boom-box to accommodate a shop area and canteen area for a recreational ground. Our client was a community group who provided recreational activities for a wide range of local individuals. The client had enrolled the services of an architect for the original design and Lion Containers Fabrications Limited provided significant advice and guidance to adhere to fire regulations and produce a product that fit their bespoke requirements. The 2 x 40ft new containers were modified as follows:
Lion Containers Fabrications worked very closely with the client to achieve the project, full drawings were provided throughout as well as regular progress visits and work in progress photographs. The units were delivered and stacked by Lion Containers Fabrications and mechanically and electrically linked on site.
- 2 x 40ft new containers to be stacked on site.
- The standard marine ply floor of the container was overlaid with 100mm ‘Celotex’ boards which assisted with the overall insulation of the structure and with the required U-Value. The ‘Celotex’ was then overlaid with 18mm ply wood as the final finish for later fitment of the customers own laminate flooring.
- A full electrical installation was commissioned to NICEIC regulations including Downflow heaters, air curtains, bulkhead lights, emergency lights, double sockets, kitchen fans and heat and smoke detectors. The installation was protected by a consumer unit and included an inter-container connection box so that the whole structure could operate together.
- Circular, custom built, aluminium framed windows were procured and installed and surrounded with a powder coated black steel mesh within both units to act as the speakers of the boom-box. The amazing views around the recreational areas were maximised in the fitting of the windows. The windows had a significant 1650mm diameter!
- Rectangular, custom built, aluminium framed windows were procured and installed to act as the cassette decks. The windows were large and provided in two different sizes; two being 2700mm x 900mm and two being 2100mm x 1200mm.
- A number of personnel doors were installed into the units, the majority of which were fire rated. These included; an external single fire exit door with closer, an internal single door with vision panels, an internal door to the stairwell with vision panels which was fire rated, an internal fire rated store room door and an internal canteen door. Most of the doors were fitted with closers to adhere to fire regulations.
- An internal staircase was custom built and installed to link between the two stacked containers. A weather proof collar was designed in house and custom fabricated to secure the link between the two units.
- A full height steel stringer support frame with safety glass sub-frame was custom fabricated installed with Georgian wired glass.
- Various partitions were installed to maximise the use of the space, these included; a steel partition to the store room which was lined with ‘Fireline’ board and a ‘Fireline’ board lined partition to the canteen area.
- A serving hatch was installed within the canteen partition.
- ‘Buttons’ were created underneath the cassette deck, they were custom fabricated in order to open and close providing ventilation throughout the unit.
- The whole structure had a ‘Speedline’ Stud and Track system installed and then a rigid polyutherane spray foam insulation was installed giving a surface spread of flame to BS476 part 7 class one at depths of 100mm. All over-spray was removed and ‘Fireline’ wall board was installed over the foam insulation. This has significant benefits for both the U-Value of the structure and the fire safety.
- Retractable security gates were installed to the inside of the ground floor windows to provide optimum security.
- The whole structure was subject to custom paintwork in RAL6005 which is a silver/grey to best match the boom-box brief.
